In a surprising twist, a Class 10 student from Gujarat, who was initially declared to have failed in mathematics, has had their grade reversed after discovering a teacher's calculation mistake. The incident, which has sparked widespread concern about the state's evaluation process, came to light after the student's family demanded a re-evaluation of the marks.
According to reports, the student scored 32 out of 40 in the internal assessment and 28 out of 80 in the theory exam. However, a simple addition error by the teacher resulted in the student's marks being incorrectly totalled as 59 instead of the actual 60—leaving the student wrongly declared as having failed the subject.
Upon realising the mistake, the student's family immediately raised the issue with the school authorities. After reviewing the error, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) ordered an official re-evaluation of the student's results.
As per News18 reports, the incident has ignited concerns about the accuracy of exam evaluations in Gujarat, with student activists calling for greater transparency.
In response to the backlash, the GSHSEB assured it would implement more rigorous checks to prevent similar incidents.
While the student's grade was corrected, the situation has fueled ongoing debates about the reliability of the grading system in Gujarat. Many parents and educators call for a thorough overhaul of the current system to ensure fairness and accuracy for all students.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of meticulous evaluation, mainly when students’ academic futures are at risk.
