A scuffle between two student groups at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi disrupted Diwali celebrations on the night of October 22, prompting police deployment outside the campus. According to a report by PTI, no official complaint was registered regarding the incident, but law enforcement was stationed as a precautionary measure to prevent further unrest.
The altercation reportedly began when one group’s Diwali celebration was interrupted by another group. University security personnel swiftly intervened, diffusing the situation and ensuring that students dispersed without further escalation. Despite the timely control of the situation, videos allegedly showing students chanting communal slogans have surfaced on social media, fueling rumours and concerns over potential unrest.
In response, local police have increased vigilance in the surrounding areas to maintain peace. A police official confirmed that while no formal complaints have been lodged, additional forces have been stationed at the university’s gates and around the campus to ensure safety.
The Students' Federation of India (SFI) condemned the incident, claiming that "outsiders" associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) were responsible for the disruption. In a statement issued on October 22, SFI alleged that members of the Rashtriya Kala Manch, an ABVP-affiliated group, invited outsiders to create a communal atmosphere on campus. The statement also accused the university administration of granting permission for the event, expressing concerns over an emerging "nexus" between the administration and ABVP.
At present, the situation remains under control, with authorities closely monitoring the area. Local police have intensified surveillance around the university to prevent further incidents. No arrests or formal actions have been reported as the campus remains under heightened security.
