Students at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala, have issued a statement today, September 25, providing updates on their ongoing protest against Vice-Chancellor Jai Shankar. The protest, which has now lasted over 72 hours, centers on allegations of misconduct by the VC during a recent visit to the girls' hostel.
The student body highlighted the challenges posed by severe weather conditions, stating that several students required medical attention due to the heat, and administration members have refused assistance. The students also reported being denied access to essential facilities, such as washrooms and closed-roof areas, during the protest. Additionally, parents of the protesting students were contacted by the university regarding the situation.
The statement also addressed claims made by the administration that students failed to attend talks. According to the student body, a representative did meet with the administration but stressed that any discussions must be held publicly, with the Vice-Chancellor present, as per their demands.
The protests began on Sunday, September 22, following accusations that the VC entered students’ rooms during an inspection and questioned them about their attire. Approximately 100 students have been participating in a sit-in outside the VC’s residence.
In response, the Vice-Chancellor has denied the allegations, stating that his visit was due to complaints of overcrowding in the hostel and labeling the claims as "baseless."
