A recent decision by the Odisha government to change the uniform colour for high school students has sparked widespread controversy among students, parents, and opposition parties. The move, which alters the existing Light Sky Blue uniforms to Dark Navy Blue, is set to be implemented from the 2024-25 academic session and has drawn mixed reactions from various quarters.

The government’s rationale for the change focuses on promoting "uniformity" and "discipline" among students. Officials argue that the darker colour will help reduce social stigma related to students' economic backgrounds, as differences in the quality of clothing may be less noticeable with a standard darker shade.

However, the move has not been without its critics. Many students and parents have voiced concerns over the additional financial burden of purchasing new uniforms, particularly for families from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. With inflation and the rising cost of living already pressing on household finances, the prospect of buying new uniforms has left many feeling anxious and discontent.

Opposition parties have seized on the issue, criticising the government’s decision as unnecessary and politically motivated. He further questioned the timing of the announcement and the lack of consultation with parents, educators, and students before making such a significant policy change.

Some educators, however, have welcomed the change. They argue that a uniform, darker shade could promote greater unity among students and help instil a sense of discipline. In response to the backlash, the Odisha government has promised to make affordable uniform options available and assured that subsidies will be provided to help cover the costs for lower-income families.

The uniform change marks the first such alteration in Odisha’s high schools since 2012. This decision has sparked a broader debate on the role of uniforms in schools, a topic that has ignited controversies in other Indian states as well. Many continue to question whether such changes truly promote equality or if they unnecessarily infringe on personal expression and increase financial strain on families.

As the state gears up for the 2024-25 academic session, the full impact of this change remains to be seen. However, the debate highlights the delicate balance between enforcing uniformity in schools and addressing the practical concerns of students and their families.
