The David Donald Fellowship for Data Journalism has been announced by Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), providing U.S. journalists with a unique opportunity to enhance their data journalism skills. A stipend of $10,000 and a year’s worth of training and mentorship from experienced data journalists will be offered through the fellowship, which is designed to help journalists refine their data analysis and storytelling abilities.

Journalists from diverse backgrounds and those working in smaller markets are being especially encouraged to apply, as the fellowship aims to empower those who might not otherwise have access to advanced data journalism resources. Diana Fuentes, IRE’s Executive Director, expressed excitement about the initiative, stating, "This fellowship is being offered to journalists who are passionate about data-driven storytelling. The goal is for journalists to be provided with the skills and resources necessary to produce high-quality journalism that can make a meaningful impact in their communities."

The fellowship will include opportunities to attend IRE’s annual conference, along with other data journalism events. A data-driven project will be worked on by the fellows, with funding provided by IRE. This hands-on experience is expected to allow fellows to apply their skills in real-world contexts, contributing to their growth as data journalists.

Applications for the fellowship are being accepted now, with a deadline set for January 31, 2025. Applicants are required to submit a resume, cover letter, and project proposal outlining a data journalism project they would like to pursue during the fellowship year. The program provides an opportunity for journalists to gain invaluable expertise in a field that is growing rapidly in importance.

The announcement of the David Donald Fellowship comes at a time when data-driven journalism is becoming an essential skill for reporters. As the field of journalism evolves, data is being used increasingly to uncover hidden stories and engage readers. Through this fellowship, IRE hopes to support journalists in gaining expertise that will empower them to use data in innovative ways, ultimately strengthening the journalism produced in communities across the United States.
