UNESCO has initiated its support efforts for the Guerrero Secretariat of Education (SEG) by conducting training workshops on the "Rebuilding without Bricks" methodology for education in emergencies.

These workshops aim to equip over 300 teaching figures, educator trainers, administrative staff, and school supervisors from various educational institutions in Acapulco, Coyuca de Benítez, and Chilpancingo with essential skills. The activities kicked off with a formal ceremony at the "Agustín Yáñez" General Junior High School, where Andrés Morales, the UNESCO Representative in Mexico, underscored the importance of education in building resilience within communities vulnerable to emergencies, particularly in the face of climate change.

Marcial Rodríguez Saldaña, Guerrero's Secretary of Education, shared insights from the aftermath of Hurricane Otis, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of teachers and families in restoring in-person classes across most schools. He pledged to further expedite recovery actions initiated by both federal and state governments for the affected population. The methodology crafted by UNESCO draws upon its extensive global experience in educational crisis response, offering school communities tools to address trauma and incorporate curricular adjustments into their practices.

UNESCO in Mexico has tailored this methodology to support the nation during various crises, including the 2017 earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic, and is now adapting it to mitigate the effects of Hurricane Otis. Furthermore, UNESCO will launch a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) based on this methodology. In line with its strategy, UNESCO is developing guidelines to integrate emergency education content on climate change into upper secondary education and formulating a participatory risk assessment methodology. The Mexico Representation is also engaged in projects focused on cultural spaces and memorial sites.
