The Karnataka Medical Education Department has issued an order to increase the stipend of senior resident doctors and postgraduate (PG) medical students by 25%, following a directive from Medical Education Minister Dr Sharan Prakash Patil.
The decision came after the minister intervened in a strike by resident doctors, leading to discussions with departmental officials. As a result, the revised stipends, effective August 1, will significantly benefit medical students.
First-year PG resident doctors will now receive a monthly stipend of ₹56,250, up from ₹45,000. The stipend for second-year doctors has been raised from ₹50,000 to ₹62,500, while third-year PG doctors will now receive ₹68,750, up from ₹55,000. Similarly, the stipend for speciality resident doctors has also increased, with third-year doctors receiving ₹81,250.
In addition to the stipend hike, the Medical Education Department is taking steps to streamline the recruitment process for Group A vacancies. Minister Patil has instructed officials to fill these positions through the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), with plans to recruit 650 Assistant Professors and 1,200 nurses. This move follows concerns about the existing recruitment process, where individual institution heads were allegedly involved in corrupt practices. The minister’s directive aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the recruitment process across the 33 government medical institutions under the department, including 22 medical colleges and 11 super speciality hospitals.
