The Kerala Education Department has embarked on a comprehensive investigation to uncover the growing number of private schools operating in blatant violation of the state's educational regulations.
Announced by General Education Minister V Sivankutty, the investigation is led by the Director of Public Instruction (DPI) and district education officials, aiming to identify these unauthorized institutions scattered across the state.
These schools, characterized by their non-compliance with the Kerala Education Rules, function in substandard conditions. Operating from rented buildings with limited infrastructure, they appoint unqualified teachers, impose their own unregulated curricula, and administer unsanctioned examinations. Additionally, they burden parents with exorbitant fees, levied under various pretexts beyond tuition, adding to the growing concern.
Sivankutty stressed the detrimental impact these schools have on young children, particularly those in pre-primary education, where development hinges on more than just academics. With no facilities for essential activities like peer interaction, games, and character-building exercises, these schools deprive children of holistic growth opportunities.
Furthermore, the minister hinted at impending action against aided schools that continue to collect hefty donations or building funds from parents. With the state’s substantial investments in public education and infrastructure, such practices are seen as exploitative and unnecessary. The investigation is expected to expose the full extent of these violations.
In parallel with these actions, Sivankutty launched the E-Cube Hindi Language Lab, designed to enhance communicative Hindi skills among upper primary students. This follows the success of the E-Cube English Language Lab, which has already made strides in improving students’ proficiency in English.
The minister also confirmed that the highly anticipated state school festival will take place in Thiruvananthapuram from January 4 to 10, 2024. The event will see more than 15,000 students competing in over 249 categories, showcasing the immense talent nurtured within Kerala's education system.
