In a recent social media post circulating widely, a Junior Resident at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kalyani, West Bengal, has come forward with allegations of sexual harassment against a Senior Resident doctor within the institution's premises.

The victim, affiliated with the Department of Community and Family Medicine, took to a public platform to demand swift and decisive action against the perpetrator, following what she perceived as inadequate institutional response to her initial complaints.

This revelation has ignited a wave of solidarity and support from both within and outside the medical community. Notably, the National President of the United Doctors Front Association, Dr. Lakshya Mittal, and prominent Right To Information (RTI) activist Dr. Vishnu Rajgadia, have jointly filed an RTI request on May 15, seeking detailed information regarding the case of sexual harassment.

The gravity of the situation was underscored by the victim's assertion that another senior resident had previously lodged a similar complaint against the accused individual. Her courageous decision to speak out has drawn attention to the systemic challenges facing victims of sexual harassment within professional environments, particularly within the medical field.

In a subsequent post on May 15, the junior doctor announced that the accused would be resigning from his position at the hospital the following day, as promised. However, despite this apparent resolution, she expressed disappointment that resorting to public disclosure was necessary to expedite the proceedings. "I am a little disheartened that I had to go public with this for the proceedings to take place faster," she lamented.

Furthermore, the victim raised valid concerns regarding the efficacy of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) procedure, noting its lengthy and arduous nature, which may not always be conducive to the needs of the victim. "The timeline and process for obtaining justice through the ICC is long and cumbersome for the victim," she remarked. Nevertheless, she expressed a willingness to acknowledge and appreciate prompt actions from the institution, should they fulfill their promises.

This incident sheds light on the urgent need for robust mechanisms to address and prevent instances of sexual harassment within professional settings, emphasizing the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for all individuals.
