In the heart of the Sundarbans, Kumirmari Island, the most remote and smallest of the nine islands in the Gosaba Block, found itself bracing for a severe cyclone as weather forecasts predicted dire conditions.

This tiny island, with its lone high school, Kumirmari High School, turned into a vital sanctuary for its residents facing the looming cyclone threat.

Soumitra Mandal, affectionately known as the Oxygen Man of Sundarbans and a dedicated teacher at a private school, shared his harrowing experience. "Hundreds of residents of Sundarbans are sheltered by Kumirmari High School. Since yesterday morning, there has been no electricity, and we are having a lot of difficulty.Due to heavy rain in the afternoon, one of the walls of my house collapsed. I wasn't in a good mental state ," he recounted.

Responding swiftly to the weather warnings, the block administration mobilized efforts to ensure the safety of the island's inhabitants. Special attention was directed towards vulnerable groups, including the elderly and pregnant women, who, along with their livestock, were evacuated to the school by afternoon. The administration provided essential supplies, including dry food and electric generators, to sustain them through the night.

"Throughout the night, anxiety ran high among the evacuees. Memories of past cyclones—Aila, Amphan, and Yaas—were still fresh, and the fear of another devastating event kept everyone on edge. Despite the safe environment of the school, sleep eluded many as they braced themselves for the worst," Mandal explained.

As dawn broke, the immediate danger seemed to have passed, and residents cautiously returned to their homes. However, their sense of relief was short-lived. Strong winds and relentless rain continued to lash the island, and by afternoon, the high tide brought new challenges. Rising water levels threatened to breach river embankments, adding to the community's distress.

Despite the precarious situation, the prompt response of the block administration and the resilience of the islanders helped mitigate potential damages. Gradually, the weather conditions began to improve, allowing residents to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The immediate disaster threat receded, but the experience left an indelible mark on the community.

Temporary shelters like Kumirmari High School are part of a broader network of cyclone centers established across the islands. These centers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents. Approximately 25,000 people across the islands sought refuge in these makeshift shelters, highlighting the extensive scale of the evacuation and relief efforts.

During this crisis, volunteers and local officials worked tirelessly to support and rescue villagers. Their efforts underscored the importance of preparedness and community solidarity in facing natural disasters. As the islanders began to return to their daily lives, the experience served as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

This poignant chapter in Kumirmari's history highlights the enduring strength and unity of the Sundarbans' communities, offering a narrative of hope and resilience in rural India.
