On Wednesday, June 5, a non-local medical student at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Srinagar was suspended following protests over an allegedly blasphemous post on a caller app. The administration quickly responded by suspending the student pending an investigation.

The suspension was announced on social media by the GMC Srinagar administration at 8:48 pm on June 5. They assured the public that they had promptly addressed the issue, suspending the student immediately and initiating a thorough enquiry. This investigation involves 13 Heads of Departments and Units and aims to resolve the matter according to established rules. The administration also urged for peace and calm on campus during this period.

Earlier that day, protests erupted at the college after the student allegedly displayed a picture on a calling application that insulted the Prophet, sparking outrage among students and junior doctors. Demonstrators demanded swift action against the student for offending Muslim sentiments.

One protestor mentioned that the student had been given three hours to remove the offensive picture but had allegedly refused, escalating the situation and leading to the protests. Officials confirmed that the demonstrators were resolute in their call for disciplinary action. This incident underscores the sensitivity of religious sentiments among the student body and the broader community in Srinagar. The prompt response from the GMC Srinagar administration demonstrates their dedication to maintaining communal harmony and swiftly addressing grievances.
