Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Railways, Electronics, and Information Technology Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India’s 500th Community Radio Station today, marking a significant milestone in the country’s community radio journey.

The ceremony, held in the presence of Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr L. Murugan and Chief Minister of Mizoram Shri Lalduhoma, introduced ‘Apna Radio 90.0 FM,’ a new station operated by the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) in Aizawl.

Shri Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of this new station, stating it would bring substantial changes to the lives of people in its coverage area. He emphasized that the launch aligns with the Government’s Act East policy, aiming to enhance regional connectivity and communication. Notably, the Union Budget has significantly increased railway allocations for the North East, supporting Mizoram’s long-standing aspiration for better rail infrastructure.

As per India Education Diary reports, Shri Vaishnaw also announced the 10th National Community Radio Awards winners. Reflecting on the progress made since 2014, when there were only 140 community radio stations across India, he noted the impressive growth to 500 stations over the past decade.

Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma lauded the inauguration, describing ‘Apna Radio’ as a transformative step for Mizoram’s communication landscape. He stressed the station’s role in supporting the state’s agrarian community by providing crucial information on weather, government schemes, and agricultural practices. His praise extended to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and all stakeholders for their dedication to realizing this project.

Union Minister of State Dr. L. Murugan praised the community-focused nature of these stations. Community radio stations are driven by a commitment to delivering last-mile information, unlike commercial radio channels, and are particularly valuable during natural disasters. He underscored their role in providing essential information and support to local communities.

Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Sanjay Jaju, reinforced the significance of community radio stations in disseminating information related to agriculture, government schemes, and weather. He noted that these stations serve as vital platforms for alternative voices, offering content in local dialects and regional languages crucial for marginalised communities with limited access to mainstream media.

Vice Chancellor of IIMC, Dr. Anupama Bhatnagar, concluded the event by celebrating the inauguration of ‘Apna Radio 90.0 FM’ as a new chapter in Mizoram’s history. She emphasised the station’s role in fostering community dialogue, showcasing local culture, and empowering citizens.

The launch of ‘Apna Radio 90.0 FM’ underscores a pivotal moment in growing community radio in India, reflecting its continued commitment to serving local communities and promoting cultural diversity.
