On Friday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, for questioning in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor that occurred on August 9.

Ghosh, who resigned from his position and government service on August 12 amidst mounting pressure, is now under scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident. His resignation followed intense backlash and demands from junior doctors for his removal, citing his failure to ensure adequate security for the hospital staff.

The CBI's move comes as part of a broader investigation into the crime, which has generated widespread outrage and led to significant public unrest. The authorities have also been in touch with the victim's family, visiting their residence to gather information about the victim's interactions and any previous complaints she might have made about safety concerns at the hospital.

Dr Ghosh has sought protection from the Calcutta High Court, alleging threats to his life. In response, the court instructed the state government to provide him with police protection. The CBI has been thoroughly examining the circumstances surrounding the crime, including the timeline of events reported by the hospital and the victim's acquaintances.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condemned the crime as a "very big crime," calling for the harshest possible punishment for those responsible. The incident has led to protests and vandalism outside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, highlighting the broader safety issue for medical personnel. The Calcutta High Court's decision to transfer the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI underscores the gravity of the case and the demand for a comprehensive and impartial inquiry.
