The Chandigarh education system has achieved a significant milestone, with a remarkable decline in the student dropout rate over the past three years. Recent data reveals that the dropout rate has dropped from 5.35% in the 2019-20 academic year to just 1.53% in 2022-23, signalling a significant improvement in student retention.

As per TOI reports, this achievement is largely credited to several government initiatives to support students and encourage them to stay in school. Critical programs such as mid-day meals, provision of uniforms, and scholarships have played a crucial role in making education more accessible and appealing, particularly for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, the introduction of counselling sessions for both students and their parents, alongside specialised training for teachers to address the needs of students with special needs, has contributed to this success.

The Chandigarh education department is not resting on its laurels; it has set an ambitious goal to reduce the dropout rate to 0% further. To achieve this, the department has outlined a series of strategies, including mentorship programs, life skills education, and vocational training, all aimed at keeping students engaged and motivated. Special attention will be given to students from marginalised communities and those with special educational needs, ensuring that no child is left behind.

This significant reduction in dropout rates underscores the effectiveness of targeted educational interventions and highlights the potential for similar strategies to be implemented in other regions. Chandigarh’s success story is an inspiring model for educational systems across the country, demonstrating how focused efforts can substantially improve academic outcomes. The continued focus on student retention and support is expected to pave the way for even more remarkable achievements in the future as Chandigarh strives to ensure that every child has the opportunity to complete their education.
