Jayabrata Bhattacharya, a dedicated educator from Birpara, has been recognized with the prestigious Shiksha Ratna award this year for his exceptional educational contributions.

Bhattacharya, who began his career as a police sub-inspector in 1999, has spent 22 years at Birpara High School, where he currently serves as the head teacher. His commitment to education in the remote tea estate regions of Alipurduar district has significantly impacted local students.

Bhattacharya’s efforts extend beyond traditional teaching. He has been instrumental in bringing school dropout students back to the classroom, working tirelessly to ensure interruptions from tea estate shutdowns do not derail their education. His dedication reflects his lifelong aspiration to build a better society through education.

In his response to receiving the award, Bhattacharya emphasized his motivation for choosing teaching as a profession. "I chose teaching as a profession to build people and society," he stated. He thanked his supporters, describing the award as a shared achievement. Bhattacharya’s recognition is part of a broader tradition, with previous Shiksha Ratna awards honouring a diverse group of educators, including college professors, primary, secondary, and higher secondary teachers, and Madrassa teachers, as reported by News 18.

The Shiksha Ratna Award celebrates outstanding educational contributions, recognizing those who cultivate students’ intellect, instil values, and foster curiosity and innovation. Bhattacharya’s accolade underscores his unwavering dedication to nurturing future generations in challenging circumstances.
