The Telangana government has implemented stringent regulations on private school fees to address concerns about affordability and transparency in the education sector. The decision announced recently, is aimed at curbing excessive fee hikes and relieving parents burdened by the rising costs of private education.

According to the education-based e-magazine Sakshi education reports, parents across Telangana have voiced concerns about the unchecked fee increases in private institutions, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. These complaints centred on the annual hikes and the hidden charges and donations many schools imposed. In response, the government has taken decisive action to ensure that education remains accessible to all without becoming a financial strain on families.

A vital aspect of the new regulation is the capping of annual fee increases at 10%. This measure ensures that schools cannot raise fees beyond this limit, offering parents some predictability in managing educational expenses. Furthermore, the government has mandated transparency in fee structures. Private schools must now disclose their full fee details, including any related costs, on their official websites and prospectuses. This move aims to eliminate the confusion and lack of clarity many parents have faced, ensuring they are fully informed before making financial commitments. Another significant change is prohibiting hidden charges and donations, a common grievance among parents. Schools can no longer impose additional, unlisted costs, often adding to the financial burden without prior notice.

To enforce these regulations, the government has introduced strict penalties for non-compliance. Schools that violate the new rules will face fines ranging from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh. This substantial penalty reflects the government’s commitment to enforcing the latest policies and ensuring that private schools adhere to the guidelines. The new rules are expected to impact over 5,000 private schools across Telangana, potentially benefiting thousands of families by making education more affordable and transparent.

Telangana’s Education Minister, Sabitha Indra Reddy, expressed her support for the new regulations, emphasising the government’s dedication to making quality education accessible without causing financial strain. She highlighted that this move is critical to creating a more inclusive and equitable educational system. By addressing parents' concerns and introducing these reforms, the Telangana government aims to ensure that all children can access affordable, high-quality education.
