A sombre mood has engulfed the campus of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (IP University) after a 21-year-old student tragically took their own life on September 16. The incident has ignited widespread protests, as students demand justice and accountability, accusing the university of negligence.

As per News18 reports, the student, recently expelled from the university hostel due to disciplinary issues, was found dead just days after the expulsion. The decision has come under intense scrutiny, with protesters arguing that the harsh disciplinary action may have led to the student's tragic conclusion.

In the wake of the tragedy, students gathered in large numbers outside the university, holding placards and chanting for justice. Their demands extend beyond this singular incident, touching on broader concerns regarding mental health support and the university’s handling of student welfare.

In response to the growing unrest, IP University swiftly removed the hostel warden from their position, which some protesters see as a first step but not nearly enough. The administration has also launched an inquiry into the circumstances that led to the student's death, promising to cooperate fully with the investigation.

Delhi Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the student's expulsion. The authorities are working to determine whether university actions contributed to the student's mental distress.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his condolences to the family, stating, "This is a heartbreaking loss. We will ensure justice is served, and appropriate measures will be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future."

The university’s history of inadequate mental health services is again under the microscope. In light of previous student suicides, there are growing calls for a comprehensive mental health support system on campus, with accessible counselling and crisis services. As protests continue and investigations proceed, the focus remains on ensuring that the tragedy of this young student’s death leads to meaningful change.
