On September 20, Kolkata will be the epicentre of a major protest rally, uniting various groups to demand justice for the horrific rape and murder that took place at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The demonstration will feature a relay torch march, beginning at 4 pm from Hiland Park and stretching 42 kilometres to Shyambazar.
The protest will see participation from a diverse array of organizations and communities. Medical associations, including the Junior Doctors’ Forum, will stand alongside members of the 'Reclaim the Night' movement, IT sector representatives, and supporters of local football teams such as East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and Mohammedan. Additionally, alumni from several city schools and universities will join the cause, reflecting the widespread outrage and solidarity surrounding the case.
This tragic event has ignited protests nationwide, with Kolkata’s junior doctors engaging in an indefinite strike that has lasted over 38 days. Their demands include justice for the victim and enhanced safety protocols in medical institutions and government hospitals throughout the state. In a recent meeting with state officials, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) reiterated their call for a secure working environment, the eradication of the prevailing threat culture in hospitals, and a thorough and transparent investigation into the murder.
The upcoming rally aims to amplify the calls for justice and reform, marking a significant public outcry and demand for systemic change in response to the grievous crime.
