Chief Justice of India, Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, emphasised the critical role of character-building in moments of uncertainty while addressing students at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) on September 23, 2024. Speaking to the next generation of legal professionals, he underscored that it is during challenging and unpredictable times that one's true character is forged.

His speech resonated with themes of strength, moral integrity, and the importance of remaining grounded amidst adversity. As the 50th Chief Justice of India, Chandrachud's address carried weight, drawing from his extensive judicial experience. Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2016 after serving as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, he has been part of some of the most significant rulings in India’s legal history.

Among his notable judgments are the landmark Right to Privacy case, which affirmed the right to privacy as a fundamental and constitutionally guaranteed right, and his dissenting opinion in the Romila Thapar case, where he advocated for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT). His track record of championing individual rights and democratic principles has cemented his legacy in India's legal framework.

As per reports of Edex Live, Chandrachud encouraged students to focus on developing strong character traits such as integrity, empathy, and perseverance, particularly in times of uncertainty and societal shifts. He noted that these traits are vital not only in personal growth but also in the pursuit of justice and fairness, essential qualities for future leaders in law.

The event, hosted by NLSIU Bengaluru, provided an inspiring platform for students to engage with one of the most prominent figures in India’s judicial landscape. Chief Justice Chandrachud’s remarks served as a reminder that while technical knowledge is vital, it is one's character that ultimately shapes success and integrity in both life and law.
