Schools in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district, which includes Guwahati, are set to reopen on September 25 following a temporary closure due to severe heat conditions.
An official order on Tuesday confirmed the decision to revoke the school closure, citing improved weather conditions. However, as per a previous order, revised school timings from 7.30 am to 12.30 pm will remain in place until further notice.
The district elementary education officer (DEEO) stated that the decision to close schools from September 24 to September 27 was reversed after cooler weather set in. Guwahati recorded a maximum temperature of 39.3°C on Monday and saw temperatures drop to 33°C by Tuesday afternoon after rainfall the previous evening.
In line with the September 20 directive, schools must conduct morning assemblies indoors, provide sufficient drinking water, and ensure all classrooms are appropriately ventilated. Students are allowed to skip waistcoats and ties due to the ongoing heat, and schools must ensure fans are functional and alternate power backups are available in case of power outages.
The DEEO emphasized that all government, provincialized, and private schools in the district should resume standard classes from Wednesday under these guidelines.
