Mumbai University’s senate elections, delayed unexpectedly, concluded earlier this week on September 24, with results announced on September 27. In a significant win, Yuva Sena, the youth wing of Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Aaditya Thackeray, claimed all 10 seats in the graduate constituency elections, defeating the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Out of 13,406 registered voters, only 55% participated in the elections, casting their votes at 38 polling stations and 64 booths across Mumbai and its suburbs, including Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The victorious Yuva Sena (UBT) candidates include Pradeep Sawant, Milind Satam, Alpesh Bhoir, Param Yadav, Shashikant Zore, Sheetal Devrukhkar, Dr. Dhanraj Kohchade, Mayur Panchal, and Sneha Gawli.
Dr. Dhanraj Kohchade, a newly elected member and former senate member, stressed the urgent need for improvements to university infrastructure, particularly focusing on hostel conditions for students. He noted that efforts to enhance facilities have already begun, underscoring a commitment to ensuring a better living environment for students. Additionally, he highlighted the critical importance of timely result announcements and promised to manage the university budget effectively to support these initiatives.
Addressing a controversial circular issued by Mumbai University that restricts demonstrations and protests, Dr. Kohchade expressed a firm resolve to challenge the policy. He stated that he and his colleagues are prepared to take legal action if the university does not retract the circular, indicating a strong stance for student rights and freedoms.
Aaditya Thackeray also celebrated the election results on social media, expressing pride in the party's performance. He remarked that Yuva Sena has not only maintained its presence but has also improved its standing in the elections, signaling a promising start for future victories.
