Dr. V. Balakumar, Dean of the School of Aeronautical Sciences at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), has provided valuable insights into India's ambitious lunar mission, detailing the expected timeline and challenges associated with landing a person on the moon. According to Dr. Balakumar, India’s first manned lunar mission will occur between 2028 and 2035.

Several significant challenges must be addressed to ensure the success of this mission. Developing reliable life support systems is critical to supporting astronauts during their moon stay. Additionally, overcoming the risks associated with radiation exposure is essential for the crew's safety. Ensuring a precise lunar landing and ascent is a technical challenge requiring advanced engineering solutions. Finally, addressing the psychological factors associated with long-duration spaceflight is vital to maintaining astronauts' mental health and performance.

As per edexLive reports, the Gaganyaan program aims to send Indian astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) by 2025, a crucial stepping stone in this journey. This program is designed to develop the necessary capabilities for human spaceflight and will provide valuable experience for future lunar missions. Furthermore, India is developing critical technologies through the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which focuses on lunar lander and ascent vehicle technologies.

Dr. Balakumar emphasised the significance of private-sector collaboration in advancing India's space endeavours. Upcoming milestones in India's space program include the Chandrayaan-3 mission set for 2024, followed by the Gaganyaan program in 2025, and the anticipated manned lunar mission between 2028 and 2035. These initiatives reflect India's commitment to becoming a prominent player in the global space exploration arena.
