A research scholar from Bharathiar University has made alarming allegations of exploitation against her academic guide, leading Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi to call for immediate action.
In a letter addressed to the Governor, the scholar detailed her distressing experiences, claiming she was coerced into performing domestic chores at her guide's residence and was demanded to pay ₹5 lakh and ten sovereigns of gold for the evaluation and clearance of her research.
The allegations extend to instances of mental harassment and threats from her guide, which the scholar states have left her traumatised and in need of protection. In her appeal for intervention, she urged the Governor to ensure a just evaluation process, shedding light on the troubling dynamics in academic mentorship.
As per Edex Live reports, in response to the gravity of the situation, Bharathiar University authorities have launched an inquiry into the claims, promising that appropriate action will be taken against anyone found guilty.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the prevalence of exploitation and harassment within academic institutions, calling into question the safeguarding measures currently in place.
While the Tamil Nadu government has previously introduced initiatives to combat such issues—such as online complaint mechanisms—the case emphasises the necessity for rigorous enforcement and oversight. Critics argue that despite existing measures, gaps remain in effectively addressing and preventing exploitation and harassment in educational settings.
As the inquiry progresses, the implications of this case could resonate throughout the academic community, highlighting the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect scholars and ensure a safe and respectful environment for all students.
