Professor Mazhar Asif Appointed As Vice-Chancellor Of Jamia Millia Islamia

Jamia Millia Islamia has appointed Professor Mazhar Asif as its new Vice-Chancellor, following Najma Akhtar's tenure, which ended in November 2023. Currently a professor at the School of Languages at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Asif will serve a five-year term, concluding when he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first.

Holding a Master of Arts and a PhD from JNU, Asif specialises in Sufism and mediaeval Indian history. With over 20 years of postgraduate teaching experience, he has published nine books in Persian, English, and Assamese, including a comprehensive Persian-Assamese-English dictionary, reflecting his dedication to promoting linguistic diversity.

In addition to his teaching and research, Professor Asif has been actively involved in various committees and councils that shape educational policies in India. He has contributed to the National Education Policy (NEP) Drafting Committee, served on the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) peer team, and participated in the Executive Councils of JNU and Maulana Abulkalam Azad National Urdu University. Furthermore, he has chaired the National Institute of Open Schooling in Guwahati and worked with the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, advocating for the preservation and promotion of Urdu in education.

As the new Vice-Chancellor, Asif is expected to focus on enhancing the academic environment at Jamia Millia Islamia by promoting research and interdisciplinary studies, as well as fostering collaborations with other educational institutions. His extensive background in education policy and commitment to inclusivity in higher education will be vital as he leads the university into a new era.
