In a move to strengthen research excellence in India, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched the "PhD Excellence Citation," a prestigious award recognizing young researchers who demonstrate outstanding contributions across various academic fields. This new citation aims to promote a high-quality research culture by highlighting exemplary doctoral work in disciplines such as Sciences (Agricultural, Medical), Engineering & Technology, Social Sciences (including Education & Humanities), Indian Languages, and Commerce & Management. Starting January 1, 2025, vice chancellors will nominate scholars, with citations awarded each year on Teacher’s Day, September 5. The initiative will honour 10 researchers annually, with two citations from each stream.

To qualify, universities must be UGC-recognized and hold NAAC accreditation. Eligible PhD scholars must have completed their degree through convocation within a single calendar year and uploaded their thesis to the INFLIBNET platform. The evaluation focuses on originality, innovation, contribution to knowledge, methodology, clarity, impact, references, presentation quality, and the candidate’s defense of their thesis.

The selection process consists of two stages. At the university level, a screening committee will assess candidates on set criteria, examining factors such as innovative problem-solving approaches and the potential societal impact of their research, particularly regarding India-centric issues. This shortlist then progresses to a UGC-level selection committee, which reviews nominations in August for final decision-making.

UGC Chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar noted that the PhD Excellence Citation reflects a commitment to fostering a robust research ecosystem and encouraging high standards among young academics. By celebrating research achievements, the UGC aims to inspire the next generation of scholars to address critical issues and expand India's knowledge base. This annual recognition is expected to elevate the profile of research across Indian universities and contribute significantly to India’s evolving academic landscape.
