Institutions and universities in Maharashtra have been asked to refresh their institutional and course related data on the MahaDBT portal so that the correct government scholarship schemes can be implemented for the academic year of 2025-26.

Higher Education Director Shailendra Deolankar directed all higher education institutions on July 30 to upload correct information about course fees, as per fee structures sanctioned by the State Government and concerned universities. Supporting documents of fee approvals should also be uploaded on the MahaDBT portal.

The Maharashtra government offers several scholarship schemes via the MahaDBT platform, comprising 14 schemes by the Directorate of Higher Education. For scholarship application by students, it is mandatory that the relevant college or university account on the portal remains updated.

Institutions are to supply details like name of college, address, clerk and principal's names and telephone numbers, courses being offered, and the related fees. Updating this facility went into effect since June 17.

Higher Education Director Shailendra Deolankar stated "Benefit under the schemes operated by the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance is provided for 16 categories of extra fees. But only 10 elements are made available on the MahaDBT portal. Therefore, colleges need to make sure they post complete fee details, including extra fees. If there is any modification in the fee structure by the concerned authority, institutions should update those changes on the portal.".

Scholarships will be made available solely based on fee and course data submitted by the institutions. Hence, colleges need to make sure that all the data provided is correct. The deadline for submitting latest course and fee data is december 1, 2025. The data has to be signed off by the concerned regional Joint Director, the admissions fee committee, and the fee regulatory authority.

While entering fee details, the institutions have to give data for a duration of up to two years from the actual course duration. After the department approves the fee structure submitted, it will be made available on the MahaDBT portal, and changes will not be permitted any further.

Authorities have underscored that any inaccuracy or outdated data would result in disqualification of deserving students from receiving scholarship benefits, thus accuracy and timely revision considerably necessary.

In a major breakthrough, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Uttar Pradesh has nabbed one of the prime accused in the now-sun-back ₹2.74-crore Hathras scholarship scam, almost 14 years after the alleged misappropriation happened.

Rajesh Kumar, alias Rajiv Gupta, the manager of Shri Krishna PG College in Hathras, was arrested by the Etah EOW team on July 30. His arrest is a milestone in the case of the scam involving the 2009-10 academic session in which scholarship money for backward class students from Class 8 to postgraduate level was purportedly embezzled by a ring of private college managers and officials.

However, the fraud was unearthed ₹2.74 crore of government money that was sanctioned to provide education for poor children. On March 8, 2011, the complaint was first filed against Rajesh Kumar and others at the Mursan police station in Hathras under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code for criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, and breach of trust.

Having accusations of a wider corruption network, the case was transferred to the Economic Offences Wing on April 24, 2014, having being investigated by district officials initially.

EOW officers disclosed that 33 people—seven government servants and 26 private individuals—have been booked so far in the case. With the arrest of Rajesh Kumar, 11 people have been held so far. Plans are afoot to track down and arrest the remaining 22 accused, who are still on the run.

This arrest follows the state's ongoing tightening of the noose on financial malpractices in the education sector, especially schemes meant for disadvantaged communities. The authorities claim the probe is being expedited to ensure justice is served in a case that has seen over a decade of delays.
