For over a year, the students' union has voiced concerns about the administration's failure to address issues related to food quality, water supply, student safety, privacy, and grievance redressal.

Kolkata, May 31, 2024 — Students at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata have entered the 12th day of their protest, which began on May 20. They are demanding improvements in basic campus necessities such as clean water, quality food, and safety measures.

For over a year, the students' union has voiced concerns about the administration's failure to address issues related to food quality, water supply, student safety, privacy, and grievance redressal. Despite repeated appeals, the students allege that no meaningful action has been taken. In a press statement released on May 28, the union expressed frustration over the administration’s inaction.

Tensions have escalated with the recent announcement of installing CCTV cameras on the residential campus. Students claim that this measure is an attempt to exert control through constant surveillance, rather than a genuine effort to enhance safety.

The student union described the SRFTI administration as having a history of intimidating and suppressing students who demand basic needs. They view the recent installation of CCTV cameras as an attempt to control students through surveillance, rather than addressing critical issues like food quality, clean water, healthcare, and safety on campus.

A significant issue driving the protest is the quality of food and drinking water on campus. Students report that they are provided with substandard food and water, leading to health issues such as skin infections and gastrointestinal diseases. The students demand immediate action to ensure access to quality food and safe drinking water.
