Student group Chhatra Samaj has announced plans for a rally, named Nabanna Abhijan, calling for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in response to the recent rape-murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Chandrima Bhattacharya, Minister of State for Finance and Health, denounced the rally as "illegal" and accused it of aiming to provoke widespread unrest in Kolkata. Speaking at a press conference on August 26, Bhattacharya criticized the organizers for not securing police permission for the event.

Bhattacharya emphasized that while there is a collective desire for justice for the victim and severe punishment for the culprits, the demand for the Chief Minister's resignation is politically driven. She highlighted that the investigation has been transferred to the CBI, underscoring that the rally's claims were politically motivated.

Additionally, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh alleged that some rally participants might don police uniforms to incite violence and falsely attribute it to the police. Ghosh, along with TMC leader Joyprakash Majumdar, voiced concerns over the potential for the rally to be used as a tool for political gain rather than genuine advocacy.
