The Delhi High Court has declared that all students enrolled at Delhi University (DU), regardless of their course or program, are eligible for membership in the Students' Union. The court struck down a previous policy restricting union membership to students in traditional courses, calling the rule "arbitrary" and discriminatory.
The verdict ensures equal representation for all students, including those enrolled in undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programs. The court emphasised that "every student has a stake in the affairs of the university," thereby recognizing the importance of inclusivity in the democratic functioning of the institution.
This ruling came after a petition filed by the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and a group of DU students, who argued that the existing restrictions were unfair and violated the principles of student representation. The court's decision is being hailed as a major victory for student democracy, with NSUI calling it a "significant step towards inclusivity."
DU authorities must review the court's directives and amend the university's constitution and bylaws accordingly. This move is anticipated to broaden student participation in university decision-making processes and allow for more excellent representation across a more comprehensive array of programs.
As per a Hindustan Times report, DU will now conduct Students' Union elections under new guidelines that reflect the court's mandate. The decision is expected to enhance the participation of a more diverse student body, strengthening the democratic values within one of India's largest and most prestigious universities.
