Union Home Minister Amit Shah has agreed to meet with the family of a young doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who was found dead under suspicious circumstances in August.
The family’s call for justice has gained national attention, with the family alleging severe lapses in the investigation and potential evidence tampering, intensifying calls for transparency and accountability in the probe.
The 31-year-old doctor’s mother shared that her daughter had expressed unease about her workplace before the incident. “She used to say she didn’t like going to RG Kar anymore,” the grieving mother disclosed, raising further questions about the atmosphere within the hospital. Her father voiced suspicions that his daughter might have been murdered in a different location and her body placed in the seminar hall, where she was later found.
The initial investigation, handled by the Kolkata police, has since been taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Several people, including the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, have been questioned. The family, however, remains dissatisfied, citing concerns over potential mishandling of evidence and expressing a strong belief that the whole truth has yet to emerge.
The case has stirred widespread outrage, prompting the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to announce a nationwide 24-hour strike in solidarity with the victim and to demand justice. The IMA’s move underscores the increasing demand from the medical community for accountability, particularly in ensuring safe and secure environments for healthcare professionals.
- August 9: The doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College.
- August 14: A mob, frustrated by the handling of the case, vandalised parts of the hospital, leading to police intervention.
- August 16: Kolkata police arrested 19 individuals allegedly involved in the hospital violence.
- November 7: Amit Shah confirms he will meet with the family in response to their plea for intervention.
The involvement of Amit Shah in the case has brought hope to the family, who are seeking a transparent investigation. As the CBI continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the doctor’s death, the case remains in the spotlight, reflecting broader concerns about safety and justice in medical institutions across the country.
The family’s meeting with the Home Minister is seen as a critical step in seeking justice and potentially influencing stronger protective measures within healthcare settings, ensuring the safety of professionals who dedicate their lives to public service.
