Denied Education: Young woman's suicide follows forced marriage

A tragic incident unfolded in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, where the aspirations of a young woman to pursue higher education were dashed by her parents' decision to marry her off, leading to dire consequences. The heartbreaking episode occurred on Monday (April 22), as reported by The Hans Media.

The victim, identified as Bhukya Devaki, aged 23, hailing from Mangayyabanjar village in Chandrugonda mandal, Bhadradri Kothagudem district, was the daughter of Srinu and Padma, who worked as agricultural laborers. Devaki was a student at Singareni Mahila College in Kottagudem and had recently completed her degree. Despite her dreams of furthering her education, her mother, citing health concerns, persuaded her to enter into marriage.

Tragedy struck in the early hours of April 13, as Devaki consumed insecticide in a suicide attempt while the household slept. Prompt action by family members saw her rushed to Julurupadu Hospital, then transferred to Kothagudem, and subsequently to a private hospital in Khammam for advanced care. Despite efforts, Devaki succumbed to her condition on Monday morning.

Upon the complaint of the deceased's mother, Chandrugonda SI Machineni Ravi initiated an investigation into the matter. The incident sheds light on the complexities surrounding societal pressures and personal aspirations, prompting a poignant reflection on the consequences of stifling individual dreams.
