The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national-level entrance examination conducted for admission to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs offered by 22 National Law Universities (NLUs) across India. Administered by the Consortium of National Law Universities, CLAT is one of the most competitive exams for aspiring law students, evaluating candidates on their aptitude in areas such as logical reasoning, legal aptitude, general knowledge, and language skills.

To be eligible for the undergraduate CLAT exam, candidates must have completed their Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent examination with a minimum of 45% marks (40% for SC/ST candidates). There is no upper age limit for appearing in the exam, and students currently appearing for their Class 12 exams are also eligible to apply. For the postgraduate program, applicants must hold an LLB degree with at least 50% marks (45% for SC/ST candidates), with no age restrictions.

The CLAT exam is conducted in an offline (pen-and-paper) mode and has a duration of two hours. The UG exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions covering subjects such as English language, current affairs, legal reasoning, logical reasoning, and quantitative techniques, with a marking scheme of +1 for correct answers and -0.25 for incorrect ones. The PG exam follows a similar pattern, featuring questions on constitutional law, jurisprudence, and other core legal subjects.

Candidates must apply for CLAT through the official website, www.clat.ac.in, by registering with a valid email ID and mobile number, filling in personal and academic details, uploading necessary documents, and paying the application fee online. The application process typically starts in July or August, with the exam scheduled for December, and results announced in January.

To succeed in CLAT, candidates are advised to stay updated with current affairs, practice regularly with mock tests to enhance speed and accuracy, and review previous years’ question papers to familiarize themselves with the exam pattern. CLAT offers students the opportunity to secure admission into the country’s top law institutions and pursue a promising legal career.
