A burgeoning crisis is unfolding at Presidency University as students have initiated a determined sit-in to oppose a proposed steep hike in fees for incoming freshmen.

The protest, spearheaded by the SFI, has seen students occupy the main campus, demanding an immediate rollback of the fee increase and initiating direct negotiations with the university's highest authorities.

Students assert that previous attempts to address the issue through a fee review committee have been fruitless and that only direct dialogue with the university's top leadership can resolve the matter. They have also presented alternative financial strategies to the administration to address the university's financial challenges without burdening students, as mentioned in a report by The Print.

Bitan Islam explained that despite a week of discussions with the newly formed fee review committee, no progress had been made. The students now call for direct engagement with the university's top officials, including the officiating vice-chancellor, registrar, and dean.

The university administration has defended the fee hike as necessary to address a decade-long financial deficit. The additional revenue, they argue, is crucial for maintaining the institution's infrastructure, updating laboratory equipment, and ensuring the library's resources. However, they have clarified that the hike would only affect new students.

The ongoing protest has disrupted regular academic activities, casting a shadow over the upcoming academic session. With students and the administration steadfast in their positions, a swift resolution appears unlikely, raising concerns about the university's future.
