A Bangladeshi student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, was sent back to her country after reacting with a love emoji to an 'anti-India' post on social media.
Maisha Mahajabin is a fourth-semester student in the Department of Electronic and Communication at NIT Silchar. The decision to return her to Bangladesh was made following her request, according to Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta, who clarified that it was not a deportation but a voluntary return coordinated with Bangladeshi authorities.
The controversy arose after Mahajabin reacted to a Facebook post by Sahadat Hussain Alfi, a former NIT Silchar student now living in Bangladesh. The post, allegedly originating from the University of Rajshahi in Bangladesh, sparked outrage among many, leading to the involvement of local police. The Hindu Rakkhi Dal, a local organization, informed the police about the post, prompting further action.
Mahajabin was sent back to Bangladesh via the Integrated Check Post at Sutarkandi in Karimganj district. The police are uncertain whether she will return to India to complete her studies. The incident highlights growing concerns over the influence of social media on international students and the sensitivities surrounding political expressions.
