In a strong move against exam cheating, Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini has issued a suspension notice for four government exam inspectors and one private exam inspector following the discovery of a Haryana Board exam paper leak.
What is more problematic about this case is that 25 policemen, including four DSPs, have also been suspended. This indicates that the issue is deep-rooted, extending not only to education officials but also to police officers.
When question papers leak, it causes harm to diligent students who work hard. It also harms the integrity of the education system. By taking such drastic action, CM Saini is sending a strong message—exam cheating and corruption will not be tolerated.
The government has initiated a thorough probe to determine how the leak occurred and who else was involved. The suspended officials will face a departmental inquiry, and if they are found guilty, stricter action may be taken.
Education Department officials have welcomed the CM's action, terming it as a must to instill confidence in the examination system. If no firm action is taken, students and parents will lose faith in board exams.
This case raises an even larger problem—exam security must be more robust. Leaks recurring are a matter for future generations as well, making education lose value. The government now has to concentrate on proper monitoring and strict security so such incidents can't occur in the future.
The authorities should use this as an eye-opener to think twice about taking exam security more seriously and not passing judgment over students based on merit.
