In a landmark decision aimed at transforming Odisha's education landscape, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across all state-run universities and affiliated colleges, starting this academic year.

The adoption of NEP 2020 in Odisha brings significant changes to the higher education system in the state. Some of the key features include: Traditional three-year undergraduate courses will be replaced by four-year programs. This shift allows students to earn certificates, diplomas, and degrees with honors at each stage of their academic journey.

In alignment with University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, students will be able to earn credits not only through regular coursework but also through activities such as internships, skill development, community service, extracurricular engagements, and participation in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS).

The policy promotes flexibility by allowing students to join and exit educational institutions within a seven-year window, offering greater autonomy in managing their academic paths. A variety of new courses will be introduced, including two skill development courses, 112 multidisciplinary courses, 14 vocational courses, 56 value-added courses, and 84 skill-focused programs aimed at enhancing practical learning and career preparedness.

The primary goal behind implementing NEP 2020 is to make higher education in Odisha more autonomous, inclusive, and industry-relevant. The policy places a strong emphasis on fostering research and innovation through practical learning experiences and skill-building internships. The alignment of course content with industry needs is expected to boost employability among graduates and make them more competitive in the job market.

The shift towards NEP 2020 is expected to bring substantial reforms to Odisha's higher education sector. The changes will not only improve the quality and autonomy of education but also promote inclusivity and relevance, ensuring that students are better equipped to meet the demands of the evolving job market. This progressive move by the state government reflects its commitment to enhancing the educational experience and future prospects for students across Odisha.
