The Bihar government is all set to terminate the continuation of intermediate classes held in colleges affiliated with various universities in the state. In a notification issued on Wednesday, the Department of Education announced that while such classes had ceased in Patna University approximately ten years ago, they would no longer be conducted at colleges falling under other universities starting from the upcoming academic session commencing in April of this year.

According to the released notice, intermediate education across all three streams—arts, science, and commerce—will now exclusively be provided in higher secondary schools starting from the forthcoming session, as reported by the news agency PTI. The department further stated that the disconnection of intermediate (plus two) from colleges had been proposed in the Universities Act but couldn't be implemented until now due to insufficient infrastructure and personnel in higher secondary schools. The resolution regarding this matter has already been published in the state gazette.

Back in 2007, the Nitish Kumar administration had made a policy decision to gradually phase out intermediate education from colleges in alignment with the National Education Policy (1986/92) and introduced the 10+2 format in plus two. "The department has already developed large-scale infrastructure and recruited 67,961 teachers for higher secondary schools and another 65,737 teachers in secondary schools under a special drive. The government schools are now equipped to handle plus two education," the notification stated, as reported by PTI. Previously, the Bihar government had also made a policy decision to establish one higher secondary school in every panchayat and had upgraded existing secondary schools.
