The need for stricter laws to regulate social media platforms has been emphasized by Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics, and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw. Concerns over objectionable content and misinformation online were highlighted, with a call made for a regulatory framework that aligns with India’s cultural sensitivities.

The challenges posed by social media platforms were discussed, with these platforms being described as hotspots for spreading vulgar content, misinformation, and disinformation. It was noted that while transformative changes in communication have been brought about by social media, the absence of robust regulations has allowed some platforms to become sources of societal disruption.

The urgency of addressing these issues was stressed, particularly in view of their potential impact on youth and public discourse. Far-reaching consequences for Indian society were warned against if inappropriate material continues to be disseminated unchecked.

The importance of considering India's cultural context in social media regulations was underlined. It was pointed out that the nation’s rich cultural heritage and diversity demand a regulatory approach that is nuanced. A framework ensuring both freedom of expression and respect for the cultural and moral fabric of the nation was called for.

Greater responsibility for monitoring and moderating content was urged from social media platforms. Strengthening internal mechanisms for identifying and removing harmful or misleading material was recommended to these companies.

A call for prioritizing discussions on social media regulation was made to the Parliamentary Standing Committee. An inclusive, multi-stakeholder approach, involving policymakers, legal experts, technology companies, and civil society, was encouraged.

The need for societal consensus on the matter was also highlighted. Constructive dialogue about the role of social media in modern life was urged, and citizens and organizations were encouraged to participate actively. It was stated that the issue extends beyond government responsibility, requiring collective societal will for resolution.

The advocacy for stricter regulations occurs amid global scrutiny of digital platforms, with challenges posed by fake news, online harassment, and harmful content being widely recognized. Through a balanced and culturally sensitive approach, it is hoped that a safer and more responsible digital ecosystem can be established for the benefit of all Indians.
