A Delhi University professor was allegedly assaulted by a PhD student while he was on his way to conduct a class, prompting concerns over the safety of teachers on campus.

Professor Anupam Jha said the incident took place when he was entering the building at around 10:30 am for a class scheduled at 11 am. According to Jha, the PhD student allegedly punched and slapped him, causing him to fall to the ground and injure his hand.

Professor recalls alleged attack

Describing the incident, Jha said the student appeared to be referring to an earlier PhD admission interview held around one-and-a-half to two years ago.

Jha said he had been one of the 10 members of the interview committee and had asked the student a question during the interview that apparently upset him.

The professor said he only understood the connection after the incident.

He also highlighted the potential seriousness of the assault, saying that a railing was behind him when he fell and that he could have suffered a much more severe head injury had he struck it.

Delhi University takes action against student

According to Jha, the university responded immediately following the alleged assault.

The student has reportedly been suspended and rusticated, while an inquiry into the incident has also been initiated.

The action comes amid growing concerns over teacher safety and campus security, particularly following an alleged physical attack on a faculty member inside the university premises.

Teachers and DUTA stand with professor

Jha said teachers across the university had extended their support following the incident.

The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) is also supporting the professor as discussions continue over the safety of faculty members.

The incident has brought renewed attention to the need for effective mechanisms to address disputes between students and faculty, particularly when disagreements relate to academic evaluations or admission processes.

The university's inquiry is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and determine any further action.
