What began with Rs 800, a leaking cowshed and four children has grown into an educational journey that has changed the lives of more than 2,000 children in Assam.

Uttam Teron started teaching children from remote and disadvantaged communities at a time when many of them had little or no access to formal schooling. He had limited resources, no institutional funding and no team of teachers. But he had a simple belief — a child’s circumstances should not decide how far they can go in life.

Teron’s journey began after he noticed children from remote areas spending their days playing in mud and floodwater, with few opportunities to study. Determined to do something, he opened a makeshift classroom in a cowshed and began teaching four children.

The conditions were far from ideal. The roof leaked and there were hardly any resources. Teron began reaching out to people for help, sending hundreds of emails asking for whatever they could spare — old books, clothes, bamboo, tin sheets and other materials that could make the learning space more suitable for children.

The response was initially limited. But Teron continued.

His original idea was modest. He wanted to prepare the children well enough for them to eventually join government schools. However, the children's parents had a different request: they wanted him to continue teaching their children until Class 10.

Teron agreed.

That decision gradually transformed his small initiative into what would become Parijat Academy, a school and residential learning space for children from some of Assam’s most remote communities.

Today, the academy has educated more than 2,000 children. Around 50 students currently live and study there, receiving an education that goes beyond textbooks and examinations.

Students are taught computers, weaving, sewing, sports and dance alongside their regular academic lessons. The idea is to help children develop practical skills, confidence and the ability to imagine a future beyond the limitations of their circumstances.

For Teron, education has never been simply about producing students who can pass examinations. It is about giving children choices.

The impact of that philosophy can be seen in the lives of his former students. Some have gone on to become professionals, including police officers, while others have returned to their communities to contribute in their own ways.

Their journeys have also come full circle. The children who once studied in Teron’s humble learning centre are now helping others — reflecting the very purpose behind his work.

From a leaking cowshed and four students to an institution that has touched the lives of over 2,000 children, Teron’s story is a reminder that meaningful change does not always begin with money or infrastructure. Sometimes, it begins with one person deciding that a child deserves a chance.
