Tilak row at Kolkata school: Teacher booked, suspended as religious freedom debate grows

 

A dispute over a sandalwood tilak at a missionary school in Kolkata has sparked a wider debate over religious freedom and the space for personal faith in educational institutions.

The controversy began after a student allegedly faced repeated objections from a teacher over wearing a sandalwood tilak on the forehead. According to the student's father, the teacher allegedly instructed the child to wipe it off several times. The incident reportedly left the family concerned, prompting the father to approach the police and lodge a complaint.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against the teacher at Alipore police station. The school management has also suspended the teacher and formed an internal committee to investigate the allegations.

The incident has since moved beyond the school premises, with political reactions bringing the larger question of religious expression in educational institutions into focus. The controversy has particularly raised questions about how schools should balance institutional rules with a student's right to practise and express their faith.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has confirmed that action has been taken against the teacher. Meanwhile, police are questioning the teacher as well as the student's parents as part of the investigation.

The allegations have generated strong reactions because religious symbols such as tilaks, turbans, crosses and other forms of faith-based expression can carry deep personal and cultural significance. For many families, allowing children to follow such practices is closely linked to their understanding of religious freedom.

The school-formed committee is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether the teacher's actions violated institutional guidelines. The police investigation will separately establish whether any offence was committed.
