Jadavpur Police Seek Records of 18 Students in Assault Case Probe

Jadavpur Police have sought information on the record of 18 students from Jadavpur University (JU) in connection with an assault case registered on August 20. The police have asked JU to provide the documents within five days.

 

Jadavpur Police Station sent the request to JU Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee on September 2 under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The notice requested for detailed information of these students.

 

The request is in connection with a case of alleged assault against fellow students. The FIR invokes various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

 

The police notice has warned the university of legal action if the requested information is not provided within the stipulated period.

 

A source said that the 18 students include members affiliated with different student organisations. “Among the 18 students, at least five students are affiliated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), while the majority are from the left organisations,” the source said.

 

Police said the students were identified after investigating officers studied the CCTV footage shared by the university. A senior officer at Kolkata Police headquarters, Lalbazar, said that some individuals visible in the footage had been identified and the university was asked to provide their details.

 

“We will send notices to them and ask them to appear before the investigating officer at the police station,” the officer said.

 

As the police continue to investigate into the circumstances surrounding the August 20 incident and the roles of those allegedly involved, the collection of student records is expected to assist in verifying identities and contacting the individuals for questioning.

 

JU Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee confirmed that the university was processing the police request. “The details are being readied and will be sent,” he said.

 

The case has drawn attention to the role of student groups on the campus, and the police are seeking information on students affiliated with different political and ideological organisations. However, the affiliations mentioned by sources do not necessarily establish involvement in the alleged assault.

 

The investigation continues and the police are expected to issue notices to the identified students once the university provides the requested records.
