Tea Board India Launches India's First NCVET-Approved Tea Testing Course, Opening New Career Opportunities for Students

Indians love tea. Throughout the day an average Indian can have over 3 cups of tea. The love for tea is real. However, what if this could become a career that actually pays? This is coming true in 2026.  In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Tea Board India has launched India's first NCVET-approved Tea Testing Course, creating a new skill-based career pathway for students and professionals interested in the tea industry. The programme aims to train certified tea tasting experts who can support India's growing premium tea, specialty tea and export markets.

The initiative comes at a time when the demand for skilled professionals in tea quality assessment, blending and sensory evaluation is steadily increasing both in India and globally.

India's First Certified Tea Testing Course Begins in Darjeeling

The new programme was launched on 3 August 2026 at the Darjeeling Tea Research and Development Centre in Kurseong, West Bengal.

Recognised by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), this is India's first formal vocational certification programme in professional tea testing. It has been introduced to develop a new generation of skilled tea professionals capable of meeting the evolving needs of the domestic and international tea industry.

What is Tea Testing?

Tea testing is much more than tasting a cup of tea. It is a specialised sensory skill used to professionally evaluate a tea's aroma, flavour, colour, strength, freshness and aftertaste. Trained tea testers follow standardised methods to assess tea quality, grade different varieties, recommend blends and help identify products suitable for different markets.

Their expertise plays a crucial role in maintaining quality standards across the tea industry, making tea testing an increasingly valuable profession.

What Will Students Learn?

Tea Board India has introduced two skill-based programmes under this initiative.

The first is a 60-hour certificate programme titled "Essentials of Tea Sommelier", while the second is a more comprehensive 210-hour advanced training course.

The inaugural batch has begun with the 60-hour programme, where participants will learn the fundamentals of tea, professional tasting techniques, blending methods, quality assessment and the future of the tea industry.

The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with the Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI), with inputs from the Department of Commerce, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and tea industry experts.

Designed in Line with NEP 2020 and NSQF

The course has been developed in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF).

With NCVET approval, it now forms part of India's formal vocational education and training ecosystem. The programme follows recognised skill standards, assessment methods and certification processes, ensuring that successful candidates receive an industry-recognised qualification.

Who Can Apply?

According to the eligibility criteria prescribed by Tea Board India and NCVET, candidates who have completed Class 12 or an equivalent qualification are eligible to apply.

The programme is also open to candidates with relevant experience in tea testing or related fields. Applicants holding NSQF Level 3 or Level 3.5 certification, along with the required work experience, are also eligible.
