Students with hearing disabilities at Government Seth Anandilal Poddar Higher Secondary School in Jaipur staged a protest over poor infrastructure and inadequate basic facilities, prompting swift action from the Rajasthan Education Department.

The protest took place on August 5, with students gathering at the school gate to highlight issues including unusable toilets, a shortage of drinking water, and cracks in classroom buildings. They alleged that repeated complaints to the school administration had failed to bring any improvement.

Students Demand Better Basic Facilities

According to the protesting students, several classrooms have developed structural cracks, raising safety concerns. They also complained that the school's toilets were in poor condition and difficult to use, while drinking water facilities were inadequate.

The demonstration drew the attention of education officials, who visited the campus to assess the situation.

During the inspection, officials reportedly identified deficiencies in sanitation, building maintenance, and other administrative arrangements, validating several of the concerns raised by students.

Education Department Takes Immediate Action

Following the inspection, the Education Department initiated disciplinary and administrative measures.

The department:

  • Removed Principal Bharat Joshi from his post.
  • Placed one teacher and one fourth-grade employee under Awaiting Posting Order (APO).
  • Assigned the vice-principal as the acting principal to ensure smooth functioning of the school.

Officials also constituted a special committee to conduct a detailed assessment of the school's infrastructure, including sanitation, drinking water availability, the condition of classrooms, and other essential facilities.

The committee has been tasked with submitting a report, after which repair and improvement work will be undertaken.

Ashok Gehlot Raises Concerns

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot visited the school after learning about the protest and interacted with students and staff.

During his visit, Gehlot criticised the condition of the institution and questioned the appointment of teachers who were reportedly not proficient in sign language, the primary mode of communication for many students with hearing disabilities.

He said he would write to Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, urging the state government to address the students' concerns on priority.

Gehlot also expressed concern that a university established for persons with disabilities was functioning only on paper and called for greater attention to inclusive education, irrespective of political considerations.

Focus on Inclusive Education

The incident has highlighted the importance of maintaining safe and accessible learning environments for students with disabilities.

The Education Department stated that the deficiencies identified during the inspection would be addressed on priority and that steps would be taken to prevent similar issues in the future.

The protest has also renewed discussions on the need for adequate infrastructure, accessible sanitation, reliable drinking water, and the availability of teachers trained in sign language to ensure quality and inclusive education for children with hearing disabilities.

The department's special committee is expected to submit its findings soon, paving the way for corrective measures aimed at improving the school's facilities and learning environment.
