Vande Mataram to be Sung at Red Fort for the 1st Time on Independence Day: Why This Historic Moment Matters for India’s Youth

For 150 years, our national song, Vande Mataram, has carried the memory of India’s struggle for freedom. This Independence Day, the song will reach a place where that freedom is celebrated before the nation every year– the Red Fort. For the first time, Vande Mataram will be sung from its ramparts during the official August 15 ceremony. 

Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and first published in Anandamath in 1882 and became one of the powerful rallying calls of the freedom movement of India. The rendition is both a tribute to the song's historic role and a significant addition to this year's Independence Day ceremony.. The song will be sung before the National Anthem and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the Tricolour and address the nation from the Red Fort, the Defence Ministry said.

Why is Vande Mataram being sung at Red Fort?

Vande Mataram is a very important addition to the Independence Day celebrations in India. The move comes shortly after President Droupadi Murmu gave assent to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, extending statutory protection against intentional obstruction or disturbance of Vande Mataram similar to that provided for the National Anthem.  Importantly, the entire six stanzas of the song will be sung, not just the shorter version that is often played at public functions.

Why was Vande Mataram not sung at the Red Fort before?

For decades now official occasions only heard the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram while the other four, were usually kept out of public use. This was because of the historical and secular concerns because later stanzas have vivid imagery calling on Hindu deities like Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. That’s why some sections got uneasy, thinking the full rendition might be perceived in a devotional way, rather than purely patriotic. 

In 1937 the Congress went with the opening two stanzas for national use, and that shorter version then became the routine thing people heard during ceremonies. But the whole pattern changes in 2026. The Union Home Ministry issued guidelines directing that all six stanzas of the official version be rendered at specified official functions, with Vande Mataram to precede the National Anthem when both are performed. 

After that , the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 was passed that further formalised its treatment under the national-honour law. This is the reason Independence Day 2026 becomes a historic moment at the Red Fort, with the full Vande Mataram set to be sung prior to the National Anthem.

Vande Mataram completes 150 years

The government has been conducting programmes throughout India celebrating 150 years of Vande Mataram. Guidelines were also issued earlier this year for its full six-stanza version, and a full version running for about 3 minutes and 10 seconds was also aired on Akashvani from March 26. This year's Independence Day invitations are also reportedly themed on Vande Mataram and include the words of all the six stanzas.

The meaning of August 15 will thus go beyond the traditional flag raising and national speech. A song that was once used to inspire the freedom movement of India will be played from the Red Fort, one of the strongest symbols of India's independence, and reignite the fire of patriotism we all have within us.
