Delhi Police has given a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for a peaceful ‘Reservation Hatao Andolan’ that was held at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on August 21. An official statement from the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central District said that the permission had been granted for an assembly of up to 500 people until 4 pm.

The police said it had “no objection” from a law-and-order point of view to the proposed gathering, subject to the conditions mentioned in the permission. The development comes after organisers had sought permission to hold the protest at Jantar Mantar. Delhi Police has said it did not allow a demonstration at the site.

Jantar Mantar security enhanced

On Friday, the security was tightened around Jantar Mantar with more police officers and barricades deployed to stop an unauthorised gathering. Some of those who arrived in the morning were taken away by police as they were not authorised to hold a protest there, PTI reports. Police officers were also stationed at strategic locations and kept an eye on traffic to the protest location. The police have announced that there will be no assembly at Jantar Mantar without prior permission.

Reservation Hatao Andolan objects to venue change

The organisers have raised doubts over the move of the protest from Jantar Mantar to Ramlila Maidan. The Reservation Hatao Andolan had made a request for permission at Jantar Mantar some one month ago and claimed that it had been shifted to Ramlila Maidan at 12 noon on the day of the protest. The organisers also raised objections to the limit of 500 people, arguing that it would limit the effectiveness of their demonstration.

The claim is that the organisers and Delhi Police's NOC allows the event at Ramlila Maidan under its conditions. The protest follows weeks of agitation by the Cockroach Janata Party in Delhi after it was brought to a close and new protests have surfaced over issues related to India's reservation system. The new development has reignited the Reservation Hatao Andolan and its planned protest in the national capital.

The authorised venue for the demonstration is Ramlila Maidan, and any demonstration at Jantar Mantar without prior permission is still banned.
