Delhi BJP Leader Urges Govt to Curb Private School Expenses, Seeks Single Uniform Policy

Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor has urged Education Minister Ashish Sood to take steps to reduce the financial burden on parents imposed by private schools through uniforms, shoes, books and other educational supplies.

In a letter to Sood, Kapoor alleged that several private schools require students to purchase multiple sets of uniforms, including summer, winter, sports and activity uniforms, along with different types of shoes.

He further alleged that these items are often sold at higher prices through vendors designated by schools, adding to the expenses faced by families.

BJP seeks single uniform from 2028

Kapoor has proposed that the Delhi government mandate a single, simple, single-colour uniform across private schools from April 1, 2028.

He also sought a provision allowing parents to purchase uniforms and shoes from the open market instead of being restricted to school-designated vendors.

According to Kapoor, families with two or more children can end up spending thousands of rupees every year on uniforms and footwear. He said growing children may require replacement uniforms more frequently, further increasing household expenses.

Ban on school sale of books, bags and uniforms

Kapoor also requested that private schools be prohibited from selling books, stationery, school bags and uniforms to new admissions from April 1, 2027.

He alleged that some schools prescribe expensive, specially designed uniforms, adding to the financial pressure on parents.

The BJP spokesperson expressed confidence that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Education Minister Ashish Sood would consider the demands and take steps in the interest of parents and students.
