Christ University to Advance Backlog Exams for 13 Law Students After ABVP Protest

Christ University has agreed to advance the supplementary examinations of 13 law students who were unable to progress to the fourth year because of pending papers, following a protest by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists.

The decision was reached after discussions between university officials and protesters on Sunday, August 23, following which the protest was called off.

Backlog exams to be held earlier

The university is yet to announce the revised examination schedule. According to reports, the dates will be finalised after discussions with the examination committee.

Supplementary examinations are generally conducted around November. Advancing the exams will allow the affected students to clear their backlogs and potentially avoid losing an entire academic year.

ABVP media coordinator Tanishq Sishodia said the university had assured protesters that the students would be given an opportunity to clear their pending papers.

University to provide academic support

The university has also reportedly agreed to arrange doubt-clearing sessions and provide library access to the students to help them prepare for the examinations.

The 13 students had accumulated backlogs from their first and second years. Some reportedly had six to eight pending papers, while others failed to meet the minimum qualifying requirements in certain subjects.

ABVP protest began on August 21

The protest began on August 21, when around 20-25 ABVP activists entered the university's Ghaziabad campus demanding that the students be allowed to progress to the fourth year.

On August 22, protesters staged a sit-in outside the university's main gate. The university subsequently approached Nandgram police, alleging trespassing, vandalism and assault on women security personnel and sought registration of an FIR.

However, Nandgram ACP Ziauddin Ahmad said on August 24 that no FIR had been registered, as the university and protesters had reached an agreement.

The university has maintained that its promotion and backlog rules apply uniformly across its six campuses.
