CBSE vs ICSE vs IB vs Cambridge vs State Boards: Which Board Is Right for Your Child?

It is getting harder and harder to pick the best possible school board for children in India. With the heated debate regarding CBSE and education reform, many parents are asking themselves whether they should instead choose ICSE, IB, Cambridge or the State Boards. But it is not a matter of which Board is best. It is a matter of which Board is best for my child based on their strengths, interests and ambitions?

 

Any given school board cannot guarantee a child success. Different systems nurture different talents and for some, they may even be counter-intuitive. A JEE/NEET aspirant needs to take a different path than an overseas university bound student and their academic needs would require far more tailored support based on what exactly they are looking for in life

 

For kids that are determined to crack JEE/NEET and get into IITs, NITs, AIIMS and other premier institutes in India, the CBSE board is often most convenient to follow. The CBSE syllabus generally aligns with the NCERT books and other resources that are key to cracking competitive exams in India. India's coaching culture is also built around NCERT and thus CBSE students need not have to look anywhere else for comprehensive learning or practice material. This is not to say that ICSE, IB, Cambridge or State Board students cannot clear these exams, since they most definitely can. But to do so, they might require extra effort and practice alongside their existing school syllabus.

 

The ICSE board, on the other hand, is known to produce graduates that are exceptionally proficient in English, reading, writing and comprehension. This board encourages in-depth learning and detailed answers and for many, this is a great foundation if they wish to pursue a career in humanities, law, journalism, literature, etc. On the downside, ICSE students may have to put in extra effort if they wish to appear for JEE/NEET as compared to their CBSE counterparts.

 

The International Baccalaureate or IB is a unique programme that encourages extensive research, essays, presentations and critical thinking rather than rote learning and formula plugging

 

This can be advantageous for students that are looking to pursue higher education in foreign universities, especially if they are looking to study in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, etc. In many ways, the IB curriculum is similar to what is taught in these foreign universities and thus can prepare students for said environment. However, this board's syllabus does not take into account India's premier exams like JEE/NEET and students may have to put in extra effort if they wish to take them.

 

If overseas education is what you have in mind for your child, you may also want to consider the Cambridge syllabus. This is similar to the IB in many ways and provides the student with a comprehensive understanding as well as specialisation in a particular field of study, depending on what they choose to study

 

. This syllabus is widely accepted by universities across the UK and the rest of the world. However, once again, Cambridge does not follow India's NCERT system and thus students may need extra guidance if they are looking to write JEE/NEET or take any competitive exams in India.

 

Many parents overlook the State Boards while considering their child's career path but there is no doubt that the State Boards nurture and produce some of the most talented engineers, doctors, civil servants and professionals in the country. The syllabus followed by most State Boards is also more cost-effective than other boards and provides better guidance for state-level competitive exams and admissions. However, it is important to note that not all State Boards are the same. The syllabus differs from state to state and depending on what state a child resides in, they may have to prepare separately for exams like JEE/NEET if that is the path they wish to take.

 

Therefore, it is important that parents don't choose a school board for their child solely based on popularity or reputation. CBSE can be a better option for kids that are determined to take up JEE/NEET and enter premier institutes in India. ICSE can be helpful for children that want to specialise in humanities, language, reading and writing. The IB syllabus is a great fit for students looking to purse higher education in foreign universities, the Cambridge syllabus provides extensive specialisation and is also widely accepted internationally while the State Boards are a cost-effective and state-specific alternative.

 

The biggest myth about school boards is that one board can give a child an upper edge over others in terms of education. However, it is a known fact that some of the highest scorers in JEE/NEET, competitive exams and even overseas university placement come from CBSE, ICSE, IB, Cambridge AND the State Boards. A school board cannot make or break a child's career based on their performance in it. It all boils down to how well a child is taught and guided by the faculty and how much effort they are willing to put into their education and dream.

 

The wisest decision a parent can make for their child is to research what board would best specialise in and suit their child's character, rather than choosing a board based on popularity. It could be CBSE, it could be ICSE, IB, Cambridge or the State Boards. But in the end, the board isn't what makes the path; it just lays the way to the destination the child and their parent desire.
