Madhya Pradesh reported 1,308 student suicides in 2021, making it the second-highest state in India for such deaths, according to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Only Maharashtra, with 1,834 cases, recorded a higher toll.

Across India, 13,089 students died by suicide in 2021, a sharp 4.5% increase from 12,526 cases in 2020. This translates to more than 35 student suicides every day. Student suicides accounted for 7.6% of the total 1,64,033 suicides reported in India that year.

In Madhya Pradesh, the 1,308 deaths mark a concerning rise over previous years. Bhopal, Indore, and Gwalior reported the highest numbers within the state, often concentrated around districts with dense clusters of coaching institutes and universities.

Mental health experts point to the pressure of competitive exams, lack of adequate counselling infrastructure, and the social stigma around seeking psychological help as key drivers. “The aspirational mismatch is stark—thousands compete for limited seats in medicine, engineering, and government jobs. When failure is treated as the end of the road, it drives despair,” said a senior psychiatrist at AIIMS Bhopal.

NCRB data shows that male students accounted for nearly 55% of student suicides in India, though female students form a significant 45% share—a much higher proportion than in other categories of suicide. The majority of cases involved students in the 15–29 age group, underlining the vulnerability of adolescents and young adults.

Despite repeated calls from educationists and mental health professionals, Madhya Pradesh has yet to implement a state-level student mental health policy. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommends strengthening psychological support in schools and higher education institutions, but implementation has been slow.

Some interventions have shown promise. Rajasthan, which has also witnessed high student suicide rates in Kota, has recently set up mandatory counselling cells in coaching hubs. In Madhya Pradesh, however, such initiatives remain fragmented and underfunded

Experts stress the need for integrated mental health services across schools, colleges, and coaching centres, alongside campaigns to destigmatise seeking help. They also point to the urgency of reducing the extreme academic pressure linked to high-stakes entrance exams.

What is “Solar Paralysis”? Is There Such a Condition?

Although the media termed the situation as solar paralysis, the experts had to explain that it is not the sunlight that causes the condition directly. The children were active in hospitals, notwithstanding the absence of direct sunlight, and they would close down regularly at nightfall, whether or not there was lighting. Medical researchers are convinced that this disease can be attributed to an internal biological clock (circadian rhythm) or to some individual brain chemistry, but a diagnosis is not yet described in any textbook. By 2016, the children began to respond to international aid and medical intervention, showing some improvements. As per a linkedin post of Dr Fahad Gul, a neurologist, the Pakistani government stepped in to cover the treatment costs for the three brothers. The precise genetic origin remains unknown to researchers (as of the last available updates), but the brothers have been reported to respond positively to the treatment, according to the subsequent news and social media reports. Through further treatment, the intensity and occurrence of their paralysis attacks diminished significantly, and they were said to be able to live more normal lives, by going to school and participating in the daily activities, even after the sun went down. The family is under medical observation.

This case of the solar kids has since been included in the international medical literature as a rare and unique example of neurochemical disorder linked to circadian. Praja Arogya Vedika (PAV) Saturday vehemently opposed the Andhra Pradesh government plan to privatize recently set up medical colleges and shift the NTR Vaidya Seva Scheme to insurance firms. The health rights collective cautioned that such steps would paralyze the state's public health system and dilute equal access.

In a press release, PAV condemned the coalition government for its move to place 10 government-funded medical colleges under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and to facilitate the sale of 50% reserved seats by Government Orders (GOs) 107 and 108. "The government must consolidate medical education and healthcare solely within the public domain. Privatisation will destroy the very essence of equitable healthcare," the statement read.

PAV convener Dr. M.V. Ramanaiah asked for the two GOs to be cancelled forthwith and withdrawal of the proposal to transfer Arogyasri to private insurers. He pointed out that colleges built with taxpayers' funds have to be kept under state control so that these are accessible to rural and economically backward groups.

Seconding the concern, PAV state secretary T. Kameswara Rao said, "Privatising what is made for public good is not acceptable. Healthcare is a right, not a business prospect." He appealed to the government to rather concentrate on building infrastructure, manning, and funding support for government hospitals.

PAV leaders also warned that not reversing these policies would deny students from underprivileged backgrounds opportunities while driving necessary healthcare services out of the reach of common folk. They called on the government to protect the ideals of accessible and affordable health care, warning that privatisation has the potential to further exacerbate inequality throughout the state's health system.

For the first time, a top institution has been featured twice in one category, raising questions about accuracy and verification of data in India's prestige ranking system. The NIRF 2025 rankings, which were recently released, have been questioned because of a major inconsistency in Banaras Hindu University's (BHU) Faculty of Dental Sciences.

BHU's Faculty of Dental Sciences appears at 15th and 18th ranks in the dentistry category, due to different submissions by the central administration and the dental faculty separately. The variance is further augmented by contradictory figures on graduate placement and median compensation, posing doubts on the methodology adopted for compiling and verifying submissions.

The anomaly was because both BHU's central administration and its Faculty of Dental Sciences individually provided their data to the NIRF. This led to two distinct rankings for the same institution, which had not happened before in the scheme's history.

The Faculty of Dental Sciences had 20 undergraduate placements in 2021-22, compared to zero placements in the same year from the central BHU submission. Likewise, the faculty's median salary figure was higher than that in the central submission.

This replication and contradictory data can mislead parents and students who are using NIRF rankings for university choice. Reliable data on graduate outcomes and placements are a key component in ranking calculations and carry important implications for institutional reputation. Experts propose stricter verification processes and cross-checking mechanisms to avoid such disparities in subsequent editions.

Though NIRF is the most well-known national ranking system, events such as these demonstrate the need to improve its methodology. Accounting for multiple submissions by the same institution would improve credibility and preserve stakeholder trust, such as that of students, academics, and policymakers.

The BHU dental college case is a lesson in caution for India's ranking of higher education. Though NIRF is a valuable benchmark, priority was needed in transparency, accuracy, and verification to uphold the sanctity of rankings that impact crucial decisions on education and career planning.

Karnataka has been allocated an additional 450 MBBS seats by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for 2025-26, meeting a long-standing demand to boost medical capacity in Karnataka.

Medical Education Minister, Sharan Prakash R Patil, said on Saturday that Karnataka is doing it for the first time and introducing a 15 per cent quota for NRIs in government medical colleges. A fixed fee of Rs 25 lakh has been fixed for each NRI seat.

"This will make government medical colleges financially more independent compared to state grants," states Sharan Prakash Patil.

The 450 additional seats have been divided in equal numbers across Bengaluru, Mysuru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Chikkaballapura, Hassan, Raichur, and Vijayanagara government colleges, with each college getting 50 seats. Even the medical college of Mooru Savita Mutt in Hubballi has been given 50 seats.

With this, Karnataka's MBBS seats have increased to 9,663 from 9,263.

Earlier this year, NMC chairman Abhijit Chandrakant Seth had announced making 8,000 medical seats available in India. After making the announcement, Patil met officials in New Delhi personally to present Karnataka's case for more seats.

KARNATAKA TO HOST SKILL SUMMIT

In addition, Sharan Prakash Patil stated the increasing demand for medical education yearly has made it impossible for numerous worthy students to meet the exorbitant fees of private colleges. According to him, the government had sought an increase in seats and welcomed the fact that the plea had been accepted.

Patil also said a Skill Summit, similar to the Bengaluru Tech Summit, will be conducted in November. There will be a job fair held in Mysuru subsequent to the Dasara celebrations, with applications to open soon. The poster for the job fair was launched by the minister at the event.

A Nursing Summit in October is planned, followed by an international roadshow to market the job fair.

A recent breakthrough in the treatment of cancer in Russia is the creation of an individualised mRNA-based cancer vaccine, called Enteromix, which has demonstrated excellent safety and 100 per cent efficacy in early clinical trials. This immunotherapy is highly targeted and immunotherapy against cancer associated with viruses and independent of viruses since it is precise to each person and very effective against both virus-related and non-virus-related cancer. 

Recent Clinical Trial Results

The trials were organised by the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia and by the National Medical Research Radiological Centre and were originally targeted at patients with colorectal cancer, which is the second largest cause of cancer mortality in the world. The experiments were done on 48 volunteers and demonstrated reduction of tumours by 60-100 percent and increased survival rates dramatically. No major adverse effects of the use of the vaccine were observed and it was reported to be safe even when used repeatedly.

In 2025, the FMBA of Russia confirmed at the Eastern Economic Forum that it is awaiting regulatory approval, and would begin clinical use starting in September-October 2025. Studies are also in progress to design vaccine variants against other aggressive cancers such as glioblastoma (brain cancer) and melanoma (skin cancer). 

How Does the Vaccine Work?

Enteromix is based on the three-step process that is driven by the high-tech AI and molecular biology:

  • Genetic Profiling: With the help of AI algorithms, researchers determine the tumour genetics of a patient and generate a personal mRNA blueprint. 
  • mRNA Synthesis:The vaccine molecules are produced to encode particular cancer-related peptides that activate the immune system to attack the cancer. 
  • Immune Activation: The vaccine, once introduced, educates the immune system to kill not just the tumours but metastatic tumour cells too.  

International and Future Outlook 

Provided that these findings are supported by large-scale trials in the future, Enteromix would transform the treatment of cancer on a global level, moving away to personalised immunotherapy instead of generalised chemotherapy. The success of the vaccine may particularly impact highly-cancer-burdened countries, such as India, where access to advanced treatment is still restricted.
